LOCATION

Paewhenua Island is bounded to the north and west by the Mangonui Harbour and Doubtless Bay to the east by the Oruaiti River and to the south by State Highway 10. It has panoramic north facing views of Mangonui harbour and the township, but is hidden from the road by the bush covered slopes forming it's southern perimeter - so discreet that passers by do not know it is there. Truly a hidden treasure.

Paewhenua offers a charming balance between rural coastal privacy and amenity, having a strategic advantage over other coastal developments with it's proximity to the facilities of Mangonui township and Coopers Beach five minutes drive away. With the bustling Kerikeri and it's amenities a 35 minute drive south and Kaitaia half an hour away, both local regional airports are within easy reach.

As well as having their own direct boating access to Doubtless Bay, Mangonui’s location means residents are within easy reach of the coastal amenities of both the east and west coasts. In addition to the neighboring Taipa, Cable Bay, Coopers and Hihi beaches, the turn off to Taupo Bay is 5 minutes to the south and to Karikari Peninsula with its spectacular unspoilt beaches 15 minutes to the north on State Highway 10. Whangaroa Harbour and its marina are 15 minutes to the south and 90 mile Beach on the west Coast is a 30 minute drive.

The location also gives golfers numerous options beginning with a 10 minute drive to the closest course, Whangaroa Golf Club.

Eighty per cent of the island is covered with covenanted bush, wetland and open space, with more than 200,000 native trees planted over the past two years. The island has a rich pre-European history, and was home to Mangonui's first harbourmaster, William Butler, in the early 1840s.

Mangonui itself — originally a whaling and trading post — is a picturesque village unspoilt by the 20th Century, much less the 21st Century. The project’s architect, Richard Priest, describes it as "the Arrowtown of the North" with historic buildings, cute restaurants and the famous Mangonui Fish ‘n’ Chip shop.
